Magnesium Improves Heart Function In Patients with Heart Failure

Magnesium improves heart function
Study Title: "Magnesium administration may improve heart rate variability in patients with heart failure"
Number of Participants: 16
Length of Study: 5 weeks
Type of Study: Controlled
Publication: Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Diseases
Study Result: Magnesium Supplementation Improved Heart Function in Heart Failure Patients

An important measure of healthy heart function called Heart Rate Variability (HRV) was improved when 16 patients with heart failure were supplemented with 300 milligrams of magnesium citrate. These patients were found to have normal levels of magnesium, but they still benefited from supplemental magnesium, indicating that the traditional method of determining magnesium status, testing blood levels, may not give an accurate picture of magnesium status.

The researchers concluded:

“Increasing of heart rate variability by magnesium supplementation may prove beneficial to heart failure patients.”
