Description
Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice (DGL) is an extract of licorice root, which is specially processed to have glycyrrhizin removed to avoid potential side effects such as elevated blood pressure. DGL improves the integrity of the natural mucus lining of the stomach and intestinal wall. It stimulates protective factors which guard against weaknesses in these linings.
Licorice has historically been regarded as an excellent digestive aid. According to the PDR on Nutritional Supplements, DGL licorice protects the stomach lining from excess acid by stimulating mucus and mucin production.1 DGL also has anti-microbial activity against the bacterium largely responsible for ulcers, Heliobacter Pylori. In the following study, it was demonstrated that DGL was just as effective as the prescription drug cimetidine in healing ulcers.
