Maca, a Peruvian plant, has research supporting its use for libido and sexual function improvement. In this double-blind, randomized pilot study, a low-dose (1.5 grams/day) and a high-dose (3.0 grams/day) maca for libido regimen were compared in 20 female depressed patients with antidepressant-caused sexual dysfunction. The Arizona Sexual Experience Scale And the Massachusetts General Hospital Sexual Function Questionnaire were used to measure sexual dysfunction and maca for libido enhancement. In 16 patients who completed the first phase of the study, maca resulted in significant improvement in the high-dose group. Maca was well tolerated.
The researchers concluded:
“Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction, and there may be a dose-related effect. Maca may also have a beneficial effect on libido.”
