Emerging research indicates most of the hangover symptoms are caused by the inflammation that alcohol consumption causes. Much of the inflammation is caused by impurities found in the alcohol beverage and generated when the body processes alcohol. In this study, an extract of opuntia ficus indica (Prickly Pear Extract) is investigated as a way to reduce the inflammation after alcohol ingestion. Reduced inflammation should reduce hangover symptoms.
64 young, healthy volunteers were given Prickly Pear Extract 5 hours before alcohol consumption. They drank for 4 hours. Hangover symptoms and blood and urine samples were assessed the following day. Three of 9 hangover symptoms – nausea, dry mouth, and anorexia – were significantly reduced. And the risk of a severe hangover was reduced by more than half. Inflammation levels in the body were significantly lower in those taking the Prickly Pear Extract compared to placebo.
