Airway hyper-responsiveness is one of the main features of allergic asthma. Quercetin has been studied for it anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy effects. In this study, the focus was quercetin’s effects in experimental allergic asthma.
This experiment was realized 21 days after the guinea pigs were made allergic to a protein found in egg whites. Changes in the reactivity of airways were studied in order to compare changes of the specific airway flow between groups with and without quercetin treatment. Also, the reactivity of the tracheal smooth muscle was measured for the reaction of cumulative doses of bronchoconstrictor mediators histamine and acetylcholine. Quercetin was added into the solution 30 minutes before the chemical mediators.
The results showed that quercetin caused significant bronchodilation, both in vivo and in vitro.
The researchers concluded:
“Quercetin proved in laboratory conditions its ability to reduce hyper-reactivity of airways as one of the main attributes of allergic asthma.”
