Study Finds Biosil Resulted in Significantly Thicker Hair

Study Title: "Effect of oral intake of choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid on hair tensile strength and morphology in women with fine hair."
Number of Participants: 48 Women with Fine Hair
Length of Study: 9 Months
Type of Study: Randomized, Double blind, Placebo-controlled Study
Publication: Archives in Dermatological Research
Study Result: Silicon in Biosil Resulted in Thicker Hair, Reduced Breaks, and Increased Hair Strength

Silicon has been suggested to have a role in the formation of connective tissue and is present in hair. Biosil is a bioavailable form of silicon which has been found to reduce wrinkle depth, skin hydration, and skin elasticity in women with sun-damaged skin.

The effect of Biosil on hair was investigated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Forty-eight women with fine hair were given 10 mg of Biosil a day orally for 9 months. Hair shape and elasticity were evaluated before and after treatment. Silicon concentration increased significantly in the Biosil supplemented group but not in the placebo group. Hair elasticity increased significantly more in the Biosil group compared to the placebo group. Hair thickness increased significantly after 9 months compared to baseline in the Biosil-supplemented subjects, but not in the placebo group.

According to the researchers:

“Oral intake of Biosil had a positive effect on hair tensile strength including elasticity and break load and resulted in thicker hair.”
