Chondroitin sulfate belongs to a family of compounds called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). GAGs form the ground substance of connective tissue such as cartilage. Chondroitin for arthritis is often combined with glucosamine sulfate in nutritional products to benefit joints. In theory, supplying the body with additional chondroitin and glucosamine sulfates in a supplement should benefit arthritis patients by decreasing pain and supporting joint structures.
In a study designed to test the benefits of chondroitin for arthritis, 120 patients were enrolled. Patients received 800 mg. of chondroitin for two 3-month periods during the 1 year of the study. The effectiveness of chondroitin sulfate was evaluated through the lequesne’s osteoarthritis index and through X-rays of the knee before and after the two treatments.
36% of the patients receiving chondroitin for arthritis improved significantly in joint function and pain scores. Furthermore, X-rays indicated that the knee arthritis did not get worse, which would normally be expected in osteoarthritis patients. Chondroitin seemed to be improving the underlying joint structure.
The researchers concluded:
“This study provides evidence that oral Chondrotin Sulfate decreased pain and improved knee function [as well as] evidence of its structure-modifying properties in knee osteoarthritis.”
