Study Title: "Mannose-sensitive adherence of Escherichia coli to epithelial cells from women with recurrent urinary tract infections."
Number of Participants: 73 Escherichia coli strains tested
Length of Study: N/A
Type of Study: In Vitro Study
Publication: The Journal of Urology
Study Result: D-mannose inhibited completely the adherence of 25 strains (42 per cent) that adhered to vaginal cells and inhibited an additional 11 strains (18 per cent) by at least 50 per cent.

D-Mannose is becoming a popular supplement along with cranberry extract to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). In this study, d-mannose was tested on 73 Escherichia coli strains from women who regularly experience UTIs. Of the strains 66 (90 per cent) demonstrated adherence to vaginal cells. D-mannose inhibited completely the adherence of 25 strains (42 per cent) that adhered to vaginal cells and inhibited an additional 11 strains (18 per cent) by at least 50 per cent.

Editor’s Note: Cranberry extract has significant support in the research literature for a clinically significant effect on UTIs. Combined with D-Mannose, cranberry extract should be even more protective.
