5-HTP superior to antidepressant medication
Study Title: "A functional-dimensional approach to depression: serotonin deficiency as a target syndrome in a comparison of 5-hydroxytryptophan and fluvoxamine"
Number of Participants: 36
Length of Study: 6 weeks
Type of Study: Double-blind
Publication: Psychopathology
Study Result: 5-HTP improved depression symptoms in 60.7% of patients. Only mild side effects were experienced by the patients.

In 1991, 5-HTP was compared to the SSRI fluvoxamine (Luvox) for effectiveness against depression. Fluvoxamine is comparable to other SSRIs, such as Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil. In the study, 36 patients received either 300 mg daily of 5-HTP or 150 mg daily of fluvoxamine. 60.7% of patients who received 5-HTP responded to the therapy, whereas only 56.1% of the patients who received fluvoxamine improved. The side effects of 5-HTP were also milder than the side effects of fluvoxamine.
